Ashura in Karbala in 2025
Ashura in 2025 will begin on the evening of Saturday, July 5th, and end on the evening of Sunday, July 6th, depending on the sighting of the moon. It falls on the 10th of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar.
Ashura holds deep religious and emotional significance for Muslims, especially Shia Muslims. It commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, and his companions at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.
Shia observance of Ashura in Karbala
Shia Muslims observe Ashura as a day of intense mourning, expressing their grief over the tragic death of Imam Hussain. Their observances include gatherings (majlis) where the events of Karbala are recounted, as well as rituals like latmiyah (chest-beating) to express sorrow and solidarity. In some regions, dramatic reenactments of the battle (Ta’ziya) are performed. Mourners often wear black and participate in processions. Some Shia Muslims also fast and give to charity in the name of Imam Hussain.
Sunni observance of Ashura
Sunni Muslims commemorate Ashura primarily by fasting, viewing it as a day of blessings and forgiveness. It is also commemorated as the day Noah left the Ark and Moses was saved from the Egyptians.
It’s important to remember that while both Shia and Sunni Muslims commemorate Ashura, their observances and the significance they attach to it may differ due to their respective beliefs and historical perspectives.
